Theres more good than bad, but its a little too hand holdy, its patronising to the audience that we get so many returning characters like the audience wouldn’t be able to comprehend it if everything was new, if you compare this to eleventh hour (and I think that’s only fair) everything new in eleventh hour and its fresh, wereas deep breath could be (and probably was originally) a series 7 episode with the eleventh doctor. speaking of which, I really love the “please just see me speech it’s wonderful but I think I could have done without 11 popping up to tell the audience to trust the shouty Scottish man, hes the doctor, we already trust him, again its a little patronising its a little bit like a mum telling their kid that school is fun and its scary at first but they will be happy they did it. More than that its basically 11 breaking the fourth wall and saying “hey i know you miss me, but this guys going to be just as good I promise”

Now, the good, Capaldi is amazing from the offset, him and Coleman instantly have amazing chemistry. i love the body horror stuff, this is a genuinely spooky episode

Sorry for the essay, 12 is my favourite doctor and I have a lot of thoughts on this episode and his era in general

I think Deep Breath is the second best introduction to a new Doctor in Modern Who. I think it is only beaten by The Eleventh Hour. There are so many great scenes in this episode. Capaldi and Coleman immediately have a great dynamic. We see the start of 12’s identity struggle in the silver platter scene with the Half-Face Man. Hi reflection in the tray is a great shot. Clara standing up to the Half-Face Man in the midst of her fear and still trusting the Doctor will have her back. The phone call with Eleven is brilliant! Twelve telling her to just see him. That whole scene is a great way to explain regeneration, I think.
